Darkthrone - A New Dimension (Demo) (192)

Line-up:

Ivar - Guitar
Ted - Guitar
Dag - Bass
Gylve (Fenriz) - Battery

"A New Dimension" was a promotape.

Review :

The demo/promo consists of two instrumental tracks. The sound is grim and raw, but there is also, at the same time possible to hear what they play without any problem. In other words: Perfect!

The first track is some thunder and synthsounds, not very interesting, but it is a nice enough intro.

The second track, Snowfall, is great though! It’s actually my favourite Darkthrone song. The two opening riffs sounds a lot like the two first riffs on the first song on Death’s debut alum Scream Bloody Gore called Infernal Death. Being inspired by this album is not something Darkthrone has tried to hide…
The band lays riff, up on riff, up on riff going mid tempo with few repetitions for 9 minutes, and it never get boring to listen to.

I believe this promo is hard to get, so I recommend getting Preparing For War, who has Snowfall on it.

Darkthrone - Land of Frost (Demo) (128)

Line Up :

Gylve (aka Fenriz) - Drums and Vocals
Ivar (aka Zephyrous) - Guitar
Dag - Bass
Anders - Guitar (tracks 2,3,5)

Review :

While the songs are obviously Death Metal (or mainly DM influenced), the song titles and their image was far more Black. Some of the tracks on this demo sound more like black, others more like death.

Probably the best thing about this demo is that the sound quality, while not great by any means, is still miles ahead of Mayhem's "Pure Fucking Armageddon" demo or Burzum's demos. Songs are not extremly complex, but are well written and shows a very young Darkthrone (Fenriz and Nocturno were 17!!!). The actual music itself doesn't compare in quality to later works like "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" or "Under a Funeral Moon", but then again, matching those albums is no easy task.

This is probably one of those "tr00" metal albums to own, since it is a demo. Creative songwriting, and good old thrashy death metal grace the songs of this demo. If you ever manage to get your hands on a copy (good luck), keep it because they aren't easy to come by.

Cannibal Corpse - Cannibal Corpse (Demo) (192)

Line Up :

Chris Barnes - Vocals

Bob Rusay - Guitar
Alex Webster - Bass
Paul Mazurkiewicz - Drums

Aka "Skull Full of Maggots".

Review :

Cannibal Corpse is no doubt one of the original driving forces that made death metal what it is today, and it all started here. this demo contains five songs that would later be re-recorded on the debut album "eaten back to life." Now, there are a couple differences...
first, the guitar tone sounded a little different than on "eaten..." it didnt sound as good qualitywise, but was still pretty good.
the second difference was the fact that a couple phrases were changed and chords were taken out before the debut album, but again, nothing to seriously hurt the quality of the sound or music...
Now, the third and biggest difference was Chris's vocals. He didnt growl like he does today (in his horrible band), which really surprised me the first time i heard it, but i listened closley to the style, and really grew to love it. He kind of did this high pitched yell, which was pretty good, but doesnt match up to the style that was eventually used.
So all in all, yes, this is a very good demo, especially for a band's first recording. if you get a chance to hear these songs, you should do so.

Running Wild - Victim of States Power (Ep) (256)

Line-up:

Rock 'n' Rolf - Vocals, Guitar
Stephan - Bass
Preacher - Guitar
Hasche - Drums

Also known as the Walpurgis Night EP.

Review :

As a caboose to their exceptional Gates to Purgatory lp, these brothers German hire "Victim of State Power", one of the record's hairier tracks, as an overseer to a pair of fairly lively, yet formuliac occult-browed benders that follow a mindset beaten into form by the debut.

Like all of their songs grooved to vinyl prior to this, once a song's momentum takes off it's pretty much etched in stone, meaning if you're looking for a rollercoaster ride of tempos during a tune, you may as well expect to find a canoe in a phone booth. Okay, maybe it's not such a straight shot as far as the dashing "Satan" goes. Its initial oh so British gust of repetitively agile fretboard aerobatics is a nice reversal compared to its partners, as if to say 'yeah, we can do that too', but it winds up falsely proclaiming something the rest of the track doesn't live up to. But that's fine 'cause the band finally throw some caution to the wind and change it up with a nifty adventuresome shift at midway and then one less dynamic at the end.

"Walpurgis Night", in the meantime, is kinda common in its mild catchiness, probably a little too heartening for the tainted ideals the band is ordering forth, meanwhile the vocally staunch Rolf throws an uncommon ear-splitter into the atmosphere for good measure. Basically a song that could've gotten shoved into the shadows on a full-lengther, but has nowhere to hide here, derailing things a tad.

Unlike hotcakes, the ep didn't sell all that well and is responsible for its collectibility that's on par with the picture disc versions of Gates to Purgatory and Branded and Exiled, which would be up at bat in about a year.

6. Black Stone Wielder (7:17)
7. Demons Gate (8:01)
and different cover art

Review :

I've listened to a lot of death metal, black metal, and doom metal, but I have to say that the track "Black Messiah" is the darkest song I have ever heard, right up there with early Mercyful Fate. Lief sings on here, and he sounds somewhat like an evil Gregorian monk. "In God We Trust" is a lot faster than most Candlemass stuff, but it's good to listen to. "Theme of the Guardians" is midpaced, not far off from Mercyful Fate, but with Lief's trademark vocals and some strange guitar melodies popping up here and there. "Goodnight" starts with a nice acoustic part, which is a nice way of keeping the album interesting. The final two tracks are Candlemass demos and they're a bit heavier than the stuff off of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus.
The raw production on here really works to the album's advantage. There aren't any technical parts, and most of it is low end, so there's no need for a really polished recording. This was THE release that got me into Candlemass, Trouble, and doom metal in general. Totally essential for anyone who wants to feel real darkness (but this just might not be evil...).

LTD 5000 Copies
Available only at Hot Topic stores

Review :

The only shitty part about getting this EP was going into the mallcore infested store Hot Topic. That will be the last time I will ever step foot into that store. There was an aggrivated employee in the back of the cashier while I purchased this EP. He thought I was stupid for buying it. I'm not, I have no regrets buying this EP at all.

Now on to the music. Cult is a really great song. The sound production of the song is great. It starts off with something similar to what a modern hard rock band might do. The guitar doesn't sound that great in the beginning with the cymbal work going on. It gets better as Dave Lombardo's assault and batter begins and the guitar riff sounds better. The drums start to get better too. When Tom Araya delivers his awesome vocals, it sounds like good ol' thrash metal. The guitars and drums sound really thrashy at this point. The best thrash metal guitar duo execute with great speed. It is not Reign in Blood-like, however it is somewhat standard for Slayer. The first guitar solo also sounds somewhat standard for Slayer. It was just short and sweet guitar solo. It could of been a little bit longer. The guitar solo that ends the song doesn't really make up for it.

The lyrics sound a little bit childish, but it is straight forward. I get the message very clearly and I think 5 years olds can get it too. Kerry King could of wrote slightly better lyrics. C'mon, dude! The drums are the most superior aspect of the song. Lombardo returns to Slayer and he really rocks. He never disappoints me.

The videos on this EP are OK. They could of put more footage of the behind the scenes video with Slayer in the studio. I was thinking it would be the one I saw on the internet, but with more added. Nope, it's the video many Slayer fans downloaded. The only thing is, the quality is much superior. The video with Slayer performing War Ensemble is pretty good. As always the band was ultra energetic along with the crowd was really into it.

Review :

Although "Under the Moonspell" is not Moonspells first album it might easily be the earliest album available to the non-kvlt kids. Here we have a nice piece of Folk Metal. That's right I didn't use the term folk/black metal, because suffice to say there is none if even nairy a trace of black metal on this album.

Well no wait the lyrics are very pagan black metalish with the ideals of pagan gods, destroying the Christian God, and one of Moonspell's favorate topics...sex. Yep this could be in fact Moonspell's either most romantic or perviest album depending on your point of view.

The album opens up with what sounds like the mournful chant of some guy as a mideastern type tune plays in the background. Soon the drumming becomes faster but still maintains it's mideastern influence. This is a good intro by Moonspell, and they must have loved it too alot. If you listen to the intro song on "Sin/Pecado" you can in fact here this intro laced in with that intro.

The intro leads to the second song which is a quick paced folk metal song. Again I won't call it black metal because the music is too slow, there are no blast beats, and the guitar work is not based entirely around either speed metal or thrash metal which is normally what black metal uses for most of its riffs. The song opens up with a nice little shout and blast of music and the sound of demented laughter. The guitar riffs on this song and the other songs given are intricut little gems that make use of the scales in a plethora of differant effects. There are a few instances of simple thrash riffing but it usually never lasts too long. The bass follows within the same value as the guitar, meanings it's just as good as it. The drumming never goes off into the wanking world of blasterbation, and instead the drummer has made quite some interesting drumming patterns suitable for the likes of folk metal. The vocals are also more harsh than on other records although not as raspy as most black metal vocalists.

Now what makes each of the songs unique is the other instruments used. On the fourth song which is a tad bit slower you can hear the distinct use of a violin. For all of you pervs out there you can also here a woman having an orgasm, so that should make alot of you happy. Don't worry it's not some scream fest like in a certain CoF song.

Jumping back to the third song it's "almost" the same as the second song guitar, bass, and drumming wise. To make things a bit differant they did change up the riffs quite abit though. This song is also a bit slower than the second song although not as slow as the fourth song. There is also a nigh bit of chanting going on here as the vocalist sings mostly about sex, pagan sex, words of pagan sexual nature that normally translate to tits, cunt, dick, and boobies, and the idea of lust.

Satan - Source of inspiration
Langsugar T.R. - Vocals
Mantus H.G.D. - Lead guitars
Malah L.L. - Rhythm guitar
Tetragrammaton T.M. - Bass
Nisroch O.F. - Drums

Released by Molon Lave records from Greece, this 7'' Ep had two versions, one in
black vinyl and one in red vinyl.

Review :

his album by Moonspell was released as a 7' vinyl. Thanks to the wonders of computers and the internet it is possible to download the two tracks of this album. Amazingly the music still sounds like a 7" vinyl. You can hear the hisses and pops laced through out the songs.

Goat on Fire/Wolves From the Fog is Moonspell's most raw, primative, and blackened album of their career. There are some folk elements here and there, but otherwise they are few a far between. The production on this album is extremely raw, and at times it is hard to make out exactly what the music is. The parts that I could hear were very nostalgic of old school black metal. Raw, bleak, cold, and dark. The instrumentation is good for the most part, and sets up the stage for future albums. The vocals on this album are of the distorted kind, and again some of them are lost in the hiss and pop translation.

Of course this album is not their best effort. Still it is interesting to listen to this album and observe how Moonspell has evolved from album to album. I would recommend this album only to those who are curious about early moonspell, blackmetal fans, or die hard Moonspell fans. Those who are more into Moonspell's gothic metal may want to steer clear of this.

Line Up:

Sauron (aka Themis): Drums
Sakis: Guitar, vocals
Mutilator Jim: Bass

Rehearsal Demo. Unofficial.

there is only the first track

Review :

Anyone able to get their hands on this recording, is both lucky and also most likely really into grindcore.
"Grindcore?", you ask. "This can't be the same Rotting Christ I know and love, the black metal leviathens from Athens, Greece". Well, get over it because it is the one and the same, and unless you like grindcore, you're gonna be hard pushed to find anything here worth getting excited for.
For one thing, this session is extremely raw, so not for everyone's likings, unless of course you like badly produced demos and rarities. In that case rest assured that this is definately a gem. Another plus is the fact that unlike a good amount of demos, this here recoding is audible. You can make out the guitar playing, the drumming and even the death growl vocals being shouted in the background.
Well, enough with the production. What you want to know is if they actually play anything of essence. Quite simply put, yes...and no. If you're looking for typical late 80's grindcore, then you'll be quite satisfied with what's on the menu. From fuzzy, grinding guitars, to blast beats and fast breaks, to the ever so discreet groove parts, to the growling vocals, you can bet your ass that anybody into Carcass' and Napalm Death's first albums will be headbanging well into the grave (especially after hearing track 6, which is quite reminiscent of 'Scum's title track). On the other hand, those looking for an early dose of Rotting Christ's type of black metal, will find little to no similarities with future recordings. But that's not a bad thing, just means that this is a band that although looking in one direction, later decide to take another path with their music.
In the end, all that we have is another demo/rehearsal with only historic value being the fact that it's the band's first known recording, one that shows an entirely different face. A great recording, but not nessecarily for Rotting Christ fans. Most likely for purists. Either way, I highly recommend it and wish anybody in search for it good luck.

Slayer - God Send Death (Ep/Single) (320)

Line-up :

Tom Araya - Vocals/Bass
Kerry King - Guitar
Jeff Hanneman - Guitar
Paul Bostaph - Drums

Promotional release for
"God Hates Us All"

Review :

This little single pack comes across more like an EP than the regular "one track" single as it has no less than two unreleased songs tagged on. The production is quite strong, despite what many have claimed on the guitars are meaty, smooth and in your face.

-God Send Death: This song is CLASSIC Slayer. Dueling solos, hammering riffs and lyrics about God, pain and the tearing loose of eyeballs. What more can a Slayer fan ask for? The riffs own, the drumming is beast-like, and the overall mood is one of confusion of violence. Kudos to Slayer for allowing us occasional glimpses at why Slayer is Slayer...even today.

-Scarstruck: What a great title and a good song. Unlike Addict which kind of wore on me a bit this song kicks along with some decent hooks/riffs in the Slayer mold. This could have made the album had they bumped one of the previously released songs like "Here Comes the Pain".

-Addict: Not as good as "Scarstruck", but still interesting. The riffwork is a little static for me, but overall cool. Lyrically, it's not half as interesting as "Scarstruck". If this had made the record it would have been the ultimate filler track, but in the scheme of an EP it works out well.

This is a "must own" for Slayer fanatics and a curiousity piece for everyone else. While "God Send Death" is the standout piece (hence why it actually made the record) the other two have worthy attritbutes that any other metal fan may enjoy.

Impostor - Little Hitler Illusion (Demo) (224)

Line-up :

Billy Messiah : vocals and bass
Tommy Nemo : guitar
Boring Ninja : drums

Review :

Impostor have many things in common with the previously reviewed Vomit, the era of existence, the lifespan, the influences (especially lyrically), the embroynic style etc. but the differences certainly outweigh the commonalities. Unlike Vomit, this isn't a trained band that has refined its skills and style to one impressively skillful rehearsal, but more of a training ground for completely untrained youngsters taking their first steps in Extreme Metal, youngsters some of which we'd later hear about in their much more famous Black Metal outfits. So, while the general concept for the band might be similar to Vomit, instead of a skillfully played Thrash grenade that could at parts put some Bay Area or Eurothrash bands put to shame we get sloppy Hellhammer worship that sometimes loses track of where its going midsong.

But - and this is a big "but" - for that exact reason there is a certain charm to this. For one thing there is of course the cult factor of this being a predecessor to the great Black Metal explosion that Norway would later become (in-)famous for in the Metal community. But moreso, its just the spirit and attitude about this rehearsal demo. While musically it has borrowed most of its sound from Hellhammer there is a certain "cocky" feeling about this, or to go for a more sophisticated term, a "testosterone-filled" feeling. A chorus laced with rhythmic "Oi!"-shouts here, a drunken, laid-back AC/DC style guitar solo there, and of course the obligatory super-silly tracks (in this case apparently a Norwegian lullaby sung in silly voices over a military march, and later an even more stupid take on the same subject with extra growls and no drums), its all there, all screaming whiskey & beer, sex and fucked up behaviour, all the things that we loved in our teenages, and that went so damn well with proto-Black Metal back in the 80s. All the way through this is just so damned catchy and it pushes your ability to resist the shiny six-pack sitting in the fridge to a level near zero.

Of course the history of Metal has brought forth many releases in this style, and from a perspective of mere skill and songwriting abilities this is anything but a milestone, but considering its historical value for the development of the Norwegian scene this is most certainly a gem worth taking a listen to.

Black Death (US) - Black Death (Full Length) (128)

line-up :

Siki Spacek - lead guitar/vocals
Greg Hicks - guitars
Darrell Harris - bass
Phil Bullard - drums (R.I.P. - February 6, 2008, colon cancer)

It's not clear who the first black (as in African-American) metal band was, but Black Death have to be one of the earlier ones. Formed in 1977, they build a sizeable local following, eventually resulting in the one album before fading into obscurity -- a tale that mirrors many a band. A telling quote from the record label president: "Their biggest problem was finding a replacement if a member quit the band -- there just weren't that many black guys in town who could play metal."

Unreleased Sampler Tracks:
'Taken By Force' - Cleveland Metal (1983)
'Until We Rock' - Cleveland Metal (1983)

Siki Spacek and Phil Bullard have formed a new project called ``The Legend Of Black Death: Mandrake``, which have played live several times, including the BW&BK Six-Pack Weekend, and the ``Legends Of Cleveland Metal`` concert (alongside Wretch, Aftershok, Nightcrawler, and Destructor).

Also released a selftitled demo tape in 1982, which included different recordings of the songs that would be used on the ``Cleveland Metal`` LP one year later.

Megadeth - Last Rites (Demo) (256)

Line-up :

Dave Mustaine : Guitars, Vocals, Piano
Chris Poland : Guitars
David Ellefson : Bass, Backing Vocals
Lee Rausch : Drums

The remastered version of Killing is my Business... and Business is Good!
features this demo as bonus tracks. "Loved to Deth" is indeed spelled that way
- the extra "a" was added for the album version. A version of "Rattlehead" from
the same recording session does float about, but was never officially on the
demo.

A certain vinyl bootleg includes "Last Rites/Loved to Deth" and "Skull Beneath
the Skin", and calls the tracks "Rock Me" and "You and Me". The songs were
never, ever called that. Ever.

Lee Rausch is the drummer on this demo.

Review :

This is Megadeth's first ever released collection of songs, and it still remains to be their fastest, most brutally heavy material even to this date. The songs on the demo would eventually evolve into the ones that are found on the debut album, "Killing is My Business...And Business Is Good!".

On to the music, "Last Rites" opens up this show up with a "morbid church" sounding piano intro. Very haunting, I wish it was longer than 45 seconds. This is probably one of the best intro pieces in metal, because it actually goes somewhere and is not just ambient noise for 2 minutes.

Next is "Loved to Deth". An incredibly fast riff gradually builds up and Mustaine's surprisingly brutal scream opens up the song. The verse is VERY fast and would be headbangable if the production didn't lick goat sac. The main riff is decent at best, but at least it is thrashy and fast, so that is a definite plus. Mustin'es vocals are pretty damn whiny, but then again, they never really changed until "Countdown to Extinction" and reached an all time low on "Rust In Peace" (except "Dawn Patrol", of couse!). Back to the song, the solo is pretty insane, and is mainly just scales, but once again, at least it is fast. The song thrashes right until the end, no lame fade out endings here!

The infamous "Mechanix" follows, and the slow intro part is missing. It's better like this. The famous riff opens the song, it sound a bit faster than was performed on "Killing...". The lyrics are lame, but the riffs in this thrash classic easily make up for them. The production on this seems to be a bit cohereant than on "Loved to Deth". The next cool riff ends the second chorus, and one of the coolest parts in all of metal comes in at 2:07, that transition is just great! This has got to be one of the best thrash songs of all time, that ending solo is much better than the one on "Loved to Deth" and actually seems to follow an appealing pattern.

Closing the demo is "Skull Beneath the Skin", and the intro is much slower than the previous songs. The first riff is really cool, and has that build-up feel to it. There is a solo very shortly into the song, which is cool in itself and leads to a completly owning riff. At this point, the song really speeds the fuck up and gets heads banging with its abrupt riff changes. The riffs on this song are fucking INCREDIBLE. Halfway through, the guitar stops for 2 seconds, leaving the bass alone, then rips right back into the kickass riffs. Mustaine's voice is still shitty, but one could say it suits the aggression of the music very well. A "Mechanix"- styled solo closes the show with a bang.

Why didn't Megadeth play this fast and brutally on their debut album? Although the production is shit, the riffs and the speed are so damn enjoyable. Very hard to find, so just download it and hear Megadeth at their loudest, fastest and most brutal.

Metallica - Metal Up Your Ass (Demo) (192)

The band's fourth demo. A live demo, actually. The lineup is
Hetfield/Mustaine/McGovney/Ulrich.

The recording date is November 29th, 1982, at the Old Waldorf, in San
Francisco. The support band was Exodus, with Kirk Hammett on guitar, playing
their fourth or fifth live gig.

The recording was done by a boom box on stage, as opposed to from the
soundboard, due to technical difficulties with the mixing.

An eleventh song, The Prince, was played, but was not part of the demo since
the tape ran out!

Review :

Back when Metallica were good, they were definitely a force to be reckoned with - and that includes their prowess as a live band. On this album, they are still VERY rough around the edges as far as performance goes, but the raw energy is definitely there.

This is Metallica's fourth demo, and probably their least well known. It was recorded in San Francisco, on a road trip that would prove to be very useful to Metallica later - this is where they first met both Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett!

The sound quality is pretty decent, considering it is an audience recording made from a boom box! (I'm surprised that the recording wasn't totally distorted, seeing as the thing was placed right on the stage!) The performance has a few minor fuck-ups here and there - but really nothing all that unusual compared to their later drunken performances. Hetfield's vocals do kind of suck at this point in time, and Ulrich fucks up a lot, but the sheer volume of the guitars compensates for any of that silliness. Hetfield and Mustaine do a competent job playing the songs, including the solos, quite well.

As for the setlist - they played pretty much everything they had at that point, including two of their favourite Diamond Head covers: Am I Evil and The Prince (Sucking My Love was out as of mid-1982, as were covers by other bands: Killing Time, Let it Loose, and Dirty Money). "The Prince" is not on the official demo tape, as the tape ran out just after Metal Militia! However, someone in the audience recorded the whole thing, and most bootleg copies of this demo nowadays come with "The Prince" as well (albeit in worse recording quality).

Interestingly enough, this was the first Metallica demo to have cover art. I have no idea what it is, actually. When this demo tape was done, they made a cover for it, as well as for the No Life 'til Leather demo from July.

Overall - worth getting? Fuck yeah, finders keepers. Worth finding on mp3? YES! Just to piss off Lar$ :-)
