Paradise Lost - Seals The Sense (Ep) (192)

Lineup:

Nick Holmes - Vocals
Gregor Mackintosh - Guitar
Aaron Aedy - Guitar
Stephen Edmondson - Bass
Matt Archer - Drums

Review :

A year after and awesome Icon album was released, Paradise Lost released this little stop-gap EP for the fans. It contains two of the better songs from Icon "Embers Fire", and "True Belief", a new song, and a live version of the song "Your Hand In Mine" from the "Shades of God" album. Since two songs are already on Icon, there's really only two songs worth mentioning here. The new song "Sweetness" is a terrific song that shows Paradise Lost moving in a more gothic direction with more clean singing and keyboards. The live version of "Your Hand In Mine" is nice enough, although it's nothing you really need.

I would only recommend this EP for the Paradise Lost completists. The song Sweetness is definitely worth having and the artwork is terrific, but the rest of this EP is somewhat useless espcially if you already own the Icon album.

Old Man's Child - In The Shades Of Life (Demo) (320)

Line-up:

Grusom - Vocals, guitars and synth
Jardar - Guitars
Tjodalv - Drums and vocals
Brynjard Tristan - Bass

The demo which got them signed, and was later released as a split with Dimmu
Borgir.

Review :

But not great. It's certainly better than DB's part of the split (I bought this as part of a split) but it isn't the best I've heard. The production isn't bad in any way, but it's kinda overdriven and overwashed at parts. The distorted guitar comes in after the clean guitar does this intro of sorts, and then goes into typical DB/OMC faire, with keyboards lining the sides of the guitar lines. The guitar tone is similar to that of DB's For All Tid. The rest of the demo concludes with this same formula, with acoustic guitars beginning the second song. The band also seems to love the 6/8 formula, which I wish they would stop using so much, because it gets annoying after awhile, along with Galder's vocals, which aren't developed, it seems. Overall, this music is a lot calmer than most of DB's stuff, and is akin more to Stormblaast after several listens, but with a more produced and active guitarist, along with better production and a few other differences here and there.

Review :

Although "Under the Moonspell" is not Moonspells first album it might easily be the earliest album available to the non-kvlt kids. Here we have a nice piece of Folk Metal. That's right I didn't use the term folk/black metal, because suffice to say there is none if even nairy a trace of black metal on this album.

Well no wait the lyrics are very pagan black metalish with the ideals of pagan gods, destroying the Christian God, and one of Moonspell's favorate topics...sex. Yep this could be in fact Moonspell's either most romantic or perviest album depending on your point of view.

The album opens up with what sounds like the mournful chant of some guy as a mideastern type tune plays in the background. Soon the drumming becomes faster but still maintains it's mideastern influence. This is a good intro by Moonspell, and they must have loved it too alot. If you listen to the intro song on "Sin/Pecado" you can in fact here this intro laced in with that intro.

The intro leads to the second song which is a quick paced folk metal song. Again I won't call it black metal because the music is too slow, there are no blast beats, and the guitar work is not based entirely around either speed metal or thrash metal which is normally what black metal uses for most of its riffs. The song opens up with a nice little shout and blast of music and the sound of demented laughter. The guitar riffs on this song and the other songs given are intricut little gems that make use of the scales in a plethora of differant effects. There are a few instances of simple thrash riffing but it usually never lasts too long. The bass follows within the same value as the guitar, meanings it's just as good as it. The drumming never goes off into the wanking world of blasterbation, and instead the drummer has made quite some interesting drumming patterns suitable for the likes of folk metal. The vocals are also more harsh than on other records although not as raspy as most black metal vocalists.

Now what makes each of the songs unique is the other instruments used. On the fourth song which is a tad bit slower you can hear the distinct use of a violin. For all of you pervs out there you can also here a woman having an orgasm, so that should make alot of you happy. Don't worry it's not some scream fest like in a certain CoF song.

Jumping back to the third song it's "almost" the same as the second song guitar, bass, and drumming wise. To make things a bit differant they did change up the riffs quite abit though. This song is also a bit slower than the second song although not as slow as the fourth song. There is also a nigh bit of chanting going on here as the vocalist sings mostly about sex, pagan sex, words of pagan sexual nature that normally translate to tits, cunt, dick, and boobies, and the idea of lust.

Moonspell - Goat on Fire / Wolves From the Fog (7" Ep) (192)

Line-up:

Satan - Source of inspiration
Langsugar T.R. - Vocals
Mantus H.G.D. - Lead guitars
Malah L.L. - Rhythm guitar
Tetragrammaton T.M. - Bass
Nisroch O.F. - Drums

Released by Molon Lave records from Greece, this 7'' Ep had two versions, one in
black vinyl and one in red vinyl.

Review :

his album by Moonspell was released as a 7' vinyl. Thanks to the wonders of computers and the internet it is possible to download the two tracks of this album. Amazingly the music still sounds like a 7" vinyl. You can hear the hisses and pops laced through out the songs.

Goat on Fire/Wolves From the Fog is Moonspell's most raw, primative, and blackened album of their career. There are some folk elements here and there, but otherwise they are few a far between. The production on this album is extremely raw, and at times it is hard to make out exactly what the music is. The parts that I could hear were very nostalgic of old school black metal. Raw, bleak, cold, and dark. The instrumentation is good for the most part, and sets up the stage for future albums. The vocals on this album are of the distorted kind, and again some of them are lost in the hiss and pop translation.

Of course this album is not their best effort. Still it is interesting to listen to this album and observe how Moonspell has evolved from album to album. I would recommend this album only to those who are curious about early moonspell, blackmetal fans, or die hard Moonspell fans. Those who are more into Moonspell's gothic metal may want to steer clear of this.

Inearthed - Implosion of Heaven (Pre Children of Bodom) (224)

Line-up:

Alexi Laiho - Vocals & Guitar
Samuli Miettinen - Bass
Jaska Raatikainen - Drums

-Recorded at Munkkiniemen demostudio with a 24 track recorder, 20th & 21st of
August 1994
-Music written by Alexi Laiho, lyrics by Samuli Miettinen.
-The outro "Tss, Aah !!!" is more or less a joke. The guitar melody of it is
from an advertisement of some light beer which was shown in Finnish TV in 1994.
"Tss" describes the sound of opening the beer bottle and "Aah" stands for
pleasure of the drinker. On Children of Bodom's cover of 'Hellion' (W.A.S.P.) an
intro appears that sounds very similar to this outro.
