Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II (Full Length) (320)

Line Up :

Michael Kiske: Vocals
Kai Hansen: Lead & Rhythm Guitars
Michael Weikath: Lead & Rhythm Guitars
Markus Grosskopf: Bass Guitar
Ingo Schwichtenberg: Drums

Review :

Best power metal album ever part 2

Some albums change everything. Thats exactly what Keepers 2 did. Depending on how you look at it, this nine song offering clocks in at either just under 50 minutes, or just over twenty years. Were talking changing the face of metal. And its even possible to put a name to that face: Michael Weikath. Let me explain.

The name that actually comes to mind when most people say Keepers 2 is Michael Kiske. Kiske himself has passed into metal mythology alongside a whole host of legendary vocalists that can do no wrong (Midnight, Halford, Dio etc.). But we can talk about him another time. The moment actually belongs to Helloween guitarist Michael Weikath. He contributed four songs. Collectively they laid the foundations for nothing less than an entire generation of speed, power, and symphonic metal. The scary part is that every one of those four songs is yet to be matched.

This is a classic and groundbreaking record in the history shelves of metal, together with part I. A source of inspiration and influence to countless bands to follow.
This is also the last chapter in the Hansen - Helloween (80's) glorious era, from where onwards the band went downhill (in my opinion).

A MUST HAVE for any power/speed,heavy metal and open-minded hard rock fan.

Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I (Full Length) (320)

Review :

Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt 1 is regarded as not only one of power metal's first albums, but also one of its finest. Unsurprisingly, superb melodic leads can be found all throughout the album. The leads and harmonies are very effective in creating an upbeat atmosphere that is both catchy and memorable. Speed is another characteristic that factors into the album's impressive sound. Though there are plenty of faster bands out now a days, the sped up riffs are very infectious and memorable. Songs like I'm Alive, Twilight of the Gods, and the mega epic, Halloween, show off Helloween's impressive arsenal of riffs and leads. The aforementioned Halloween, a 13 minute long track, is quite possibly the best song the band has ever written, with only Keeper of the Seven Keys even remotely close. There is virtually nothing you can complain about with the song, save for the sketchy lyrics which don't look like they have much to do with each other. Hansen really struck gold with that song, as it perfectly exemplifies the attitudes of power metal, whether it be the numerous shredded solos, the fantasy lyrics, or the fast paced riffing. Great stuff. Helloween attempt a couple slower paced songs, the upbeat, happy sounding Future World, and the ballad, A Tale That Wasn't Right. Both these songs are excellent outings, though I have to admit, I much prefer the more power metal-ish outings.

Overall, Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt 1 was a very important album in the world of metal. The album helped build Helloween's legacy as one of the grandfathers of power metal, a legacy by which the band will soon not be forgotten by. Though some may shrug off the album by today's standards (something I don't quite agree with, but hey), when Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt 1 was released back in 1987, it was very fresh. Some may ask, which is better, Pt 1 or Pt 2? To tell the truth, I like Pt 1 more, but this is mostly due to my preference of Kai Hansen's songs over Michael Weikath's writing. We definitely have an essential album here.

Gus Makrikostas - bass
Nick Papadopoulos - drums

Review :

Have you ever heard an album so moving and epic, that visions of a motivated army charging into battle with swords held high entered your mind? Personally, Ive had a few responsible for enlightening cries, yet Battleroar's "To Death And Beyond" made me run into my neighbor's yard and take their land as my own; they still cant past my swinging axe without receiving a severed limb! Indeed, these Greek do wonders when applying their unique brand of high-flying power metal that feels forceful and dynamic in so many ways, unlike shit-pies like Ride The Sky bent on worshiping Helloween or whatever. Truth be told, tribute bands lead a path of dismay while real factions like Battleroar rocket through the clouds and continue mastering power metal; that is the synopsis of "To Death And Beyond"

Metal Church - Metal Church (Full Length) (320)

Line-up:

David Wayne : Vocals
Kurdt Vanderhoof : Guitars
Kirk Arrington : Drums, percussion
Craig Wells : Guitars
Duke Erickson : Bass

Originally, Metal Church was formed in 1980 in San Francisco by Kurdt Vanderhoof and others. Lars Ulrich (Metallica) also played in the band in 1981 on a few rehersals but didn't make it into the band, and so he is not considered as one of the past-members. This lineup released a few demos but nothing else. In 1981, Kurdt moved to Washington State and found Craig, Duke, and for a while Tom Weber on drums. Tom was quickly replaced by Kirk Arrington and this lineup recorded

The original European version of this album (SPV pressing) contains the bonus
track "Big Guns". This song is NOT available anywhere else. Metal Massacre V has
"The Brave", not "Big Guns".

Review :

etal Church. The very name evokes images of darkened cathedral spires and the occult rituals likely held within the structure's expansive architecture. The album that bears the mystical structure's name is far less mysterious, but infinitely legendary, as it is one of the finest dislays of the pure essence of heavy metal in traditional, power, and thrash metal forms. The band's debut integrates elements of all three, resulting in one of the best, most original albums you're ever likely to hear. Suspend your disbelief: this is triumphant and fascinating and remarkable and a thousand other positive adjectives used to describe one's ideal metal album.

There's not even the semblance of a weak moment on this masterpiece. This is one of the truly indispensible heavy metal albums, at least needing to be heard if not owned. If one were to truly find fault in it, one would be required to seriously reconsider their entire stance on heavy music. Don't write this off as absent fanboyism: this is legitimately great and I'm trying my best to express it. So check this bad boy out, and save your disappointment for the new Metallica album.

Megadeth - Rust In Peace (Full Length) (320)

Line-up :

Dave Mustaine : Guitars, Vocals
Marty Friedman : Guitars
David Ellefson : Bass, Backing Vocals
Nick Menza : Drums

Review :

Quite Possibly The Greatest Album Ever

Yes, I am not the slightest bit exaggerating with the title of this review. I seriously believe Rust in Peace is probably the best album ever. I have lots of albums I really love. I know albums that I listen to a lot that are heavier. I know albums I listen to that are faster. I know albums I listen to a lot that are more technical. Not that all three of these musical traits aren't present on Rust In Peace of course, but never in my life have I heard an album with more focus, better composition, and more memorable songwriting than Rust In Peace by the great Megadeth. And while Megadeth did some excellent stuff both before and after this, they have yet to scale these heights again...this is just absolutely phenomenal...

Overall, Rust in Peace is a thrash classic, and easily Megadeth's best album. It features Megadeth at their best, with technical riffing, very impressive shredding and soloing, and some nice bass work. Though Megadeth doesnt fall completely off the face of the planet with their next album, as hard as they try the band will not match their maximum opus, Rust in Peace, nor do they even record an album that sounding similar. The band claims that the next Megadeth album could fit into the band's RiP - CtE era (as well as some more commercial elements), but can it top Rust in Peace? Unlikely, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Riot - Thundersteel (Full Length) (320)

Line-up:

Mark Reale - Guitars
Tony Moore - Vocals
Don Van Stavern - Bass
Bobby Jarzombek - Drums

Review :

It seems as if some people have come to the same conclusion as I, namely that this is indeed one of the finest efforts metal has to offer . All I can say is that if you should happen to stumble upon this gem, don't get fooled by the silly cover, but do yourself a favor and pick it up. Classic heavy/power metal doesn't get much better than this!

he songs here are all insanely creative, catchy, and really damn cool. The vocals are extremely addictive, and will stick in your head even after one or two listens. Tony Moore may be a Halford clone, and he may pale in comparison to Midnight of Crimson Glory, but he's no less than amazing, just a small step below Halford. That's saying something, too. I wonder why we never saw Moore in any other bands. He was a very promising talent. The guitar lines are absolutely spectacular; searing and crystal clear, and they really remind me of the equally cool ones put out by Criss Oliva around the same time period in Savatage's best albums. See "Fight or Fall" and "Run For Your Life" for the best Savatage comparisons, and tell me those couldnt've been on Hall of the Mountain King.

Review :

I think the best thing about Hammerfall is the actual music, Cans is not the strongest vocalist, the lyrics are cheesy as heck, and the ballads would make Celine Dion cry. However, the music is top notch power/heavy metal.

Another cry from bashers is that these Swedes are not original. True, I will concede that point but the great thing is that they take influences from many bands and not just one. Many power metal bands want to be Helloween, Hammerfall want to be Helloween, Accept, Dokken, Manowar, DIO, etc...They take some of the great elements of these legendary bands and mix it up to create an awesome power metal stew?

Anyhoo, to the songs. This album starts with a couple of scorchers - Riders of the Storm, Hearts on Fire, and On The Edge of Honour. You may have to pause here because the headbangin' is quite fierce. Catch your breath and move on to the title track which is a mid paced cruncher and very good.

Then you have the instrumental and Trailblazers which is another speedy ass kicker. The dual lead guitars are intense and heavy. This leads me again to the point of great music. The great thing about Hammerfall is the guitar work. Its a great balance of crunch and shredding. They shred but not to the point of wankery. They just seem to realize how much of a solo you actually need. No more, no less.

Next up is the typical Hammerfall ballad - Dreams Come True. All I can say is that if you hate their ballads, this won't change your mind.

The five remaining tracks are prolly the best set of 5 songs that Hammerfall ever put on record. You have 2 amazing covers in Chastain's Angel of Mercy (this could be one of the great covers of all time) and Yngwie's Rising Force. Both are respectfully done and given a little extra kick.

In Memoriam is an instrumental but this is not an intro/outro. This is classic metal. Great song. Definately don't skip this one.

The other 2 tracks are some of the best original Hammerfall songs of all time, IMO. They are The Unforgiving Blade and Hero's Return. This is metal that is energetic, fun, and still kick ass. The choruses are grand but catchy and the guitars sizzle throughout.

Well, what can I say, Hammerfall have recorded a monster of an album...AGAIN. These guys deliver the goods time and time again. Some respect is deserved.

Titan Force - Titan Force (Full Length) (320)

Line-up :

Vocals: Harry "The Tyrant " Conklin (Jag Panzer, Satan's Host, Riot, Ballistic)
Guitars: Mario Flores
Bass: John Flores
Guitars: Bill Richardson
Drums: Stefan Flores

Colorado Springs in 1983, Mario Flores (g) his siblings John (b,v) and Stefan (d) got together to form a metal band. In the beginning the band was named Titan and released a 4-track demo tape a few months later. After the demo release the recruited Bill Richardson as a guitarist/keyboardist. This line up persisted a few years, before they managed to find a vocalist after renaming themselves to Titan Force. Harry Conklin, known for his work with Jag Panzer, joined Titan [...]

Review :

"Titan Force" is actually a "how to" metal album. It contains everything an album needs to be named as complete, name it riffs, haunting choruses, amazing vocal performance (all hail the Tyrant) or splendid rhythm section work. Titan Force balance miraculously between power and melody, technicality and directness, in a way that (in my humble opinion) only Sanctuary managed to at the time. Combining the 80's metal energy with the 90's metal intellect, "Titan Force" shines in the crossroads of two ages. Too bad it's not mentioned as equal in the same leagues of both straightforward heavy metal and technical prog/power. But it's OK. Whoever discovers this gem will know what I'm talking about.

Agent Steel - Unstoppable Force (Full Length) (320)

Line-up:

John Cyriis: Vocals
Juan Garcia: Guitars
Bernie Versailles: Guitars
Michael Zaputil: Bass
Chuck Profus: Drums

The 1999 Century Media rerelease includes the Mad Locust EP at the end of the
disc (as tracks 10-13).
Cat. nr. 66039-2

A re-release of this album has the song "The Unexpected", which was never on
any studio album, but was performed live. The track on the re-release was
recorded live 6/20/87, and appeared originally on the official video "Live at
Hammersmith".

The Japanese version contains the bonus track "The Ripper".

Review :

Agent Steel for all practical purpouses is the heaviest power metal band of all time. Of course back in the 80's power metal was pretty much power thrash, as it had a lot more balls than it does now. Unstoppable Force is soo fucking heavy, yet so majestically glorious. They were the heaviest possible thrash version of "Somewhere in Time" Iron Maiden. What could possibly be better? Now it must be noted that there are many "perfect" albums out there for me...many but small in relation to the number of metal bands that I listen to. Unstoppable Force is everything that I love about metal, delivered in the most maniacal way possible, thanks to John Cyriis who may very well be insane, but goddamnit, when asses needed to be kicked, he answered the call. All the way through this album every song strives to batter you with metal, at all cost. My favorites are Unstoppable Force, Never Surrender, Chosen to Stay, Still Searchin...hell I love em all. The guitar melodies and solos here are like light sabers carterizing your wound after every slice they make. Vocals are quite possibly the most maniacaly stark ravenly mad that they could possibly be. I dont know if that makes sense, so that should give you an idea of what I mean. John Cyriis is unbelievable, both in talent, and other things. Almost like a heavy metal super hero from a comic book. He's a thrash metal version of my favorite swashbuckling bucaneer, Mr. Bruce Dickinson. Cyriis does Bruce great justice, but delivering Bruce style vocals.....TO THE EXTREME! If you dont believe me about this album, go listen to it and feel like an idiot. Hopefully the ass kicking Agent Steel gives you will serve as a lesson.

"Hell Destroyer" was recorded, engineered, produced and mixed at Richard Carr

producers, Cage vocalist Sean Peck and guitarist Dave Garcia. The CD was
mastered by two-time Grammy-award winner Gavin Lurssen (Guns n' Roses, Alice

California.

Review :

The beast from the east! er...west coast. Back with supreme crushing riff after riff. You wont get this much riffery for your cash these days anywhere else! Songs like 'Hell Destroyer','From Death To Legend', 'Christ Hammer', 'Fire and Metal', 'Rise Of The Beast' or 'Metal Devil' absolutely rip your face off! I almost broke my neck thrashing around to 'Rise Of The Beast' when I saw these guys recently! The production is bright, clear and ballsy! That's the way US Power Metal should be!

The storyline is pretty different for a metal band as well...it being about KILLING the devil and his evil political puupets and facades rather than blowing him on a regular basis as in devoutly satanic music. Personally I think the devil needs as much of an ass-kicking as any of the other deities so CHRISTHAMMER that mother-fucker and let's get going!
Literally every song on here is powerful, melodic, memorable and fist-pumping...the way heavy metal should be! So many revivalist bands are following tried and tested paths, which is fine, but Cage are actually forging ahead with their own thing as this stuff sounds fresh and new to my old weary ear-balls.

Review :

Yep, this is one of those albums that never leaves your CD player, you know all the words to all the songs, sings about Vikings, has the most badass front man in the world, and becomes an instant classic. This is also the perfect example of a masterpiece album late in a band's career, which is possibly the best they've ever recorded. Amon Amarth have been one of the longest, most respected and repeatedly successful death metal bands out there and with this 2006 full length release, With Oden On Our Side, they have proved all the naysayers of the Fate of Norns album wrong, all the naysayers that said it's impossible to release another good album for them, and proved that the Vikings still got it.

Everything about Amon Amarth's career; the musicians, the songwriting and previous records all culminate to this record. This is the hard work of roughly a decade into this album. Of course Amon Amarth is far from calling it quits, but I think that they wanted to pull all the stops and make this the best damn Viking themed death metal album out there, and they did. With Oden On Our Side is by far one of the greatest accomplishments they've ever achieved, making an album full of so many classic songs, great musicianship and everything put together - all done with great enthusiasm and vigor.

To look at what this album has going for it:

- Excellent songwriting
- A unique sound
- Varied songs
- Atmosphere
- Brilliant vocals and instrumentation

And in comparison, its wrongdoings:

- Some people don't like death metal
- But they're faggots

Review :

This is one of those albums everyone knows to be a classic. When something is considered a classic (this album has been that for 20 years now), newcomers tend to listen to it in a prejudiced way, purposely looking for negative aspects. I myself, I grew up with it, so I know why this is a classic.

Thrash fans, I implore you: give this a chance. If not for the great lyrics, the classic riffs, or the vocal performance of Chuck Billy, at least check it out for the killer soloing.
