Possessed - The Eyes Of Horror (Ep) (256)

Line-up :

Mike Torrao - Guitar
Mike Sus - Drums
Jeff Becerra - Bass & Vocals
Larry Lalonde - Guitar

Produced by Joe Satriani.

Re-released by Century Media Records with "Beyond the Gates".

Review :

This is by far the thrashiest album I've heard put out by Possessed. It's a pity it's only five songs. There isn't one song where you listen and just go, "Eh..Next track." That's just not a possible reaction to this CD.

The guitar work on this EP is just amazing and I think that's mostly due to Joe Santriani producing it and I've heard he also gave the guitarist lessons. Every song is cocked-full of catchy, timely riffs. Never a dull moment riff-wise. The drumming is your typical thrash drumming and it done well. Nothing too special, but it matches the music perfectly. The vocals sound pretty similar Lemmy at time. They go in nice with the music. They sound so tortured and full of agony which is perfect for Possessed's style of thrash. Nothing special about the bass. It does it part and nothing more.

If you have not heard this EP and are a fan of Possessed, or just a fan of thrash for that matter, I highly recommend you pick this EP up. You will not regret it.

Possessed - Death Metal (Demo) (224)

Line-up :

Jeff Beccera - Vocals, Bass
Brian Montana - Guitar
Mike Torrao- Guitar
Mike Sus - Drums

One of the first ever death metal demos.

"Fallen Angel" was recorded during the same session, and did not make the
official demo, but it was just as heavily bootlegged. Fallen Angel was a
one-take track, done quickly at the end of the recording session.

Review :

Or thrash, or even speed metal! This demo is what started it all, in 1984... though at times it sounds more like a tight-as-fuck Venom (Becerra does a wicked Cronos at times!), and it's interesting to note how much thrashier this is than the Seven Churches LP.

Exhibit one: the title track, riff at 1.30 - that is a pure fucking thrash riff, and it's gone in the final version, replaced by a faster, higher-pitched, less overtly bludgeoning thrash riff. But here, it's a raging thrasher not unlike Chemical Warfare. The drum flurry kicks in and the slightly faster, more chaotic riff, and then the solo - though it's kind of interesting that it sounds like there's only one guitar during the solo sections... apparently Brian Montana was completely asleep on the job! Oh yeah and how about that closing shriek before the final solo. Mark Osegueda, eat your heart out. And take Tom Araya with you while you're there. Becerra's vox are fucking awesome.

Evil Warriors: SCREAM OUT IN FRIGHT!! Little silly vocal intro, then the song is roughly similar to the Seven Churches version. As I said, the demo is superficially identical to the LP, including the total fucking ruleage of "Burning in Hell"... it's only if you're a Possessed fucking freak like me that you'll notice the little things like "hey wait a minute, that riff is slightly different". One more example... the melodic counterpoint riff in Burning in Hell is more overt, though under this solo there are definitely two guitars and the solo a lot sloppier and Hanneman-ish and directionless, so let's blame Brian Montana, but after that, the wicked thrash break (you know which one!) is more overt than on the LP.

Thus, to recap... it's thrashier, with the riffs a bit more accented. The vocals aren't quite as out-there... I hear Black Metal on Death Metal, and also a little bit of "blasting our way through the boundaries of Hell...". The solos aren't as cool sometimes, and at times the riff under the solo is missing (Death Metal), oh and Fallen Angel doesn't have any bells.

Wait, Fallen Angel isn't even on this demo!! There's 2 versions or something - I have no idea what the story is but some bootlegs have Fallen Angel, others do not... in any case, it was recorded at the same time.

So is it any good? Of course it's good!!! It's fucking awesome!! What it lacks in sheer must-kill, it makes up for in thrashing goodness. This one definitely qualifies as death metal, just like the album that succeeded it... and just like that one, it's a good solid slab of thrash. Worth getting - historical value: unbelievably high. Musical value: just about as high. The only complaint is that Montana's solos are goofy and not nearly as focused as those of Lalonde, and the guitar tone is far more ordinary... but enough of my bitching... there's only one Seven Churches, but this is damn close.

Sapremia - Subconscious Rot (Demo) (192)

line-up :

Lou Ferrara - Vocals, Bass
Brian Rulli - Guitar
Brian Valenti - Guitar (Mortal Decay (US))
Ryan Hill - Drums (Malicious Intent)

Review :

Hailing from New Jersey, Sapremia were a popular underground death metal band during the early 1990's. Both of their demos were well received among fanzines and tape traders, but for some reason the band parted ways before being given the opportunity to release anything for a label. "Subconscious Rot" is their debut effort, containing five songs of riff-healthy, pulverizing, New Jersey-style death.

This tape is a perfect example of how death metal can still be brutal without constantly abusing blastbeats and playing at breakneck speeds. Much like Mortal Decay in their demo days, Sapremia displayed an emphasis on quality songwriting rather than blind aggression or trying to be the world's "sickest" band. The focus here is always on the riffs, and while there are periodic outbreaks of sheer, blasting brutality, these are performed in a tasteful manner and never take on a primary role in the music.

The dual-vocal attack continually leads the listener into a place of unearthly horrors. Unlike Carcass or Exhumed, the vocals are not at contrast with each other by being extremes of highs and lows. Rather, both are deep, deathly growls that only differ from one another in pitch. The bass guitar sits proudly in the mix, creating an eerie, droning effect that perpetually hangs over the music like desolate fog over a graveyard. The drummer's beats are modest and at perfect symbiosis with the guitars and bass. His use of double bass is always spot-on, especially during the rancid riff feast that is "In Lifeless Form". Blastbeats are furious yet simple, giving off the feel of an accelerated thrash assault.

The bulk of each song is nicely played at mid-tempo, seamlessly flowing along and transitioning into the next. Something interesting I noticed about "Disintegration of Your Soul" is that the first riff sounds like it came from Epitaph's "Bloodstained Visions" from the split LP with Excruciate. I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but having listened to so much death metal from this period in my lifetime I can't help but notice these things.

If you're a fan of older Mortal Decay, Damonacy and other classic New Jersey bands, or can simply appreciate well-structured, guitar-oriented death metal then you will not regret getting this demo tape.

Municipal Waste - Municipal Waste (Ep) (192)

Line-up:

Tony Foresta - Vocals
Brandon - Drums
Andy - Bass
Ryan Waste - Guitar

Review :

Every great band starts from a good first impression. That’s I what I normally think of, making me to look up for band’s old EPs and demos. This self titled EP of Municipal Waste is no short of that. This angst filled EP just rampages its way through my stereo, showing a good example of Crossover Thrash.

The first actual track starts of with a couple of hammer on to give a thrashy vibe. This is only soon to be squashed upon fast paced furious beat topped with angry screams. The next track Detention Mosh Session starts off with something that sounds as if something taken from an 80s skate video. The whole EP comes in the form of short burst of anger with lyrics spewed upon in the form of teenage screams. This may be a crossover EP but this is nowhere close you might hear from Suicidal Tendencies. The record though sounds as if it came from the same era. If it’s intentional, they really got it. The recording is very raw, giving it a pseudo 80s feel. The aggressiveness of this band is captured in this EP in an amazing way. If the band played much faster and screamed harder, they might end up with power violence. I recommend this to all hardcore fans out there who love the old school vibe.

Taipan (Aus) - Taipan (Ep) (320)

line-up :

Emilio Sarpa - Vocals/Bass
Dave Zerafa - Vocals/Guitars
Frank Degennaro - Drums

Review :

An early Australian oddity, Taipan are a four-piece hardly anyone goes to great lengths to hear. While on the commercial side, their sound doesn’t wear the glittering spandex of glam, nor does it possess that every-song-could-be-a-ballad Dokken-esque appeal. The production is loud, lively, and unapologetic, wholeheartedly complimenting the band’s no-frills, undisguised power that sticks a foot in the doorway of NWOBHM without stepping on Maiden’s trampled toes and is as traditional as it comes. In fact, I believe the mix is the lifeforce of the disk, nearly coming off as recorded live while the band was in a really enterprising mood.

These four tracks can easily enliven a failing party. The fact that these tunes are as unknown as the band wouldn’t matter; they radiate invigoration despite a simple traditional formula that probably wouldn’t offend the pop freaks at the gathering, while Darkthrone fans would either use this time to take a leak in the yard or be grateful the Billboard top 40-fest is finally starting to clench its ass cheeks, depending on the selection of prior music. “Break Out”, “Lady”, “Tired of You” and “The Cellar” are all up-tempo and momentous without repeating the same speed or timing, each song’s structuring is relatively divergent from one another, and solos are vibrantly executed. They seem to have an ear for simplicity and catchiness that wisely replaces the sugary topping with something spicier and heady that is in part due to the production.

Vocalist/bassist Emilio Sarpa can resemble a rougher Vince Neil, dwelling in the high/mids with a scratchy side that almost equals his time singing cleanly, but does dig into a lower mid tone during “The Cellar”, the slowest and least commercial song that chugs almost exactly like “Seek And Destroy” and melts some extra heaviness on the end. Actually, quite a few similarities in the two can be found, including that brief downscaling melody that sets up the later song’s chorus, but I know I’m just grasping here.

In hindsight, 1981 was a good year for the quartet to record this ep. It’s early enough to avoid the mid-80’s pretty eruption of glam and the inevitable and incorrect lumping of them into it. As well, it’s late enough to leap beyond 70’s corporate rock limitations bands like August Redmoon, Demon, and Americade couldn’t bypass. For the time, it’s pretty cutting edge, so I don’t know why it went ashamedly unnoticed.

Thy Majestie - Echoes of War (Ep) (320)

Line-up:

Dario Grillo - vocals
Giovanni Santini - guitar
Maurizio Malta - guitar
Dario D'Allesandrio - bass
Giuseppe Bondi - keyboards
Claudio Diprima - drums

Review :

Echoes of War was originally an EP, but then made into an MCD. Here we have four songs making a very short MCD for only 15 minutes. However, the song alone 'In God We Trust' (a Stryper Cover) makes this album worth all the money, and i'm not just saying this because i'm a big Stryper fan. As the MCD states it was only released as a bonus track for the Japenese version of Hastings 1066. Anyway it is truly a fantastic epic power metal song, with great progressive and medieval influence and the use of a chior to add to the feel of Saxon England. The other songs are good but not as good as this, Echoes of war is just taken from Hastings 1066, even though it's a great song it really has no real purpose for this MCD other then to make it longer. Anyway the 2 other songs are rare 'brasilian versions' of Thy Majestie's debut 'The Lasting Power'. Hywelbane is a 1 minute instrumental/atmopsheric song that prepares us for Facing the beast which is another fantastic epic hymn in the typical vein of Thy Majestie's Progressive/Power metal sound. Overall 92/100.
