Review :
Who would suspect the main influence of an early Swedish 7-inch from an Eskilstuna band titled Shakespeare (they even have a text on the back cover reading “We want you back William. Alive.”) to be Mercyful Fate? They’ve got a lot in common: menacing riffs, a general catchy nature, dark atmosphere and strange vocals. Though it should be said that Shakespeare is inferior to the king’s band in all four aspects.
In fact the vocals of Piotr Jastrzebski are tons worse – even those who hate King Diamond must admit that. Piotr should stick to his bass which he handles with honour, instead of forcing words down the microphone while taking a dump. Also the closing solo of “Sneaking Around” is so terribly out of tune that it isn’t even funny. Besides these two shortcomings the single is quite enjoyable. Not fantastic as a certain band from Copenhagen, but interesting – which is reinforced by the sheer obscurity of the single. As in most cases, the original is to be preferred, but there’s no reason to be overly negative.
