Cirith Ungol - 1979 Demo (Demo) (320)

Line up :

Tim Baker - vocals
Jerry Fogle - guitar
Greg Lindstrom - guitar
Michael Flint - bass
Robert Garven - drums

Review :

A Real Man's Music

"...probably with the biggest dick ever. Seriously it's like a small child rolled up in a carpet."

This was the phrase a friend of mine uttered while trying to describe Cirith Ungol, or more particularly the physiology of the lead singer. While crude, it goes right to the point: Cirith Ungol is music for men, music for fans of real heavy metal.

This early demo is a bit different from their later releases; while Cirith Ungol took on a much more original sound with their mix of heavy and doom metal later on this demo represents them as more of a traditional heavy metal band. There are traces of doom, for sure, and some crushing riffs are to be heard especially on "Frost and Fire" (later the name of their first album) and "Better Off Dead."

The production is rather lacking, but on the whole it gives this demo a homegrown and unique feel that you will never find in a more popular heavy metal band like Iron Maiden or even Judas Priest. The most important part of this early Cirith Ungol demo is that is gives the listener a sense of what an amazing band they would eventually become. Every song is well written, and very enjoyable to listen to. It's a bit rough around the edges, but for the prize of strong, powerful, manly heavy metal the price of admission is well worth it.

Anathema - All Faith is Lost (Demo) (192)

Line Up :

Darren White - Lead vocals
Jamie Cavanagh - Bass & vocals
John Douglas - Drums
Danny Cavanagh - Lead guitars
Vincent Cavanagh - Rhythm guitar

Recorded from the 17th to the 20th of May 1991 at M.A. Studios, Liverpool.
Artwork by Ian Stead for Bio-Mass Art.

To the memory of Graham Emanuel

Review :

Anathema has been labeled many things over the years. From their humble Thrash/Death demos to their more famous Doomdeath offerings to their current bid for the position of Pink Floyd. Anathema has always been changing their sound and their first recordings should have been an early indicator.

In the Demo ‘All Faith is Lost’ we hear up-tempo Thrash/Death Metal that will surprise one who has only heard Anathemas’ “proper recordings”.

The production is a little thin, though a million times better than any of the early Paradise Lost demos. The guitars are heavy and the drums are fast. The vocals are straight forward Death Metal (perhaps the only constant from their pre-signed days) as well as a faster version of “They Die” that was later seen on the ‘Crestfallen’ EP.

The lyrics are poetic and delivered passionately (what would you expect from two of the most prolific song writers who were honing their craft.) Again the production is the only let down here as the over recording is very good.

Over all there isn’t much to say about this aside from the fact it’s simply a cool piece of Heavy Metal history and should be sought after by Anathema fans as well as Death/Thrash Metal-heads.

Trivium - Trivium (Ep) (320)

Line Up :

Matt Heafy - Vocals/Guitar
Brent Young - Bass
Travis Smith - Drums

Music and lyrics written by Matthew K. Heafy.
All musical arrangement by Matthew Heafy and Travis Smith.
Contributions by Travis Smith and Brent Young.

'Demon' was later released as a bonus track on the 2004 Lifeforce Records
re-release of 'Ember to Inferno'.

'The Storm' and 'Sworn' where used as bonus tracks for the Japanese edition of
'Ember to Inferno''

Review :

After hearing Ember to Inferno, Ascendancy and The Crusade, I came back to this short cd and listened to it a couple times. The first 4 songs are on Ember to Inferno and basically sound exactly the same. So I won't really discuss it in detail, but they all have a basic metal feeling. Actually this whole cd sounds a bit different from any other band out now days. Metallica is an obvious influence they show on here.

Most people hate Heafy's voice, on this cd, I honestly say it does not bother me the least bit. His singing voice is talented and is used for most of the choruses. It is pretty damn catchy, you'll find me singing these songs at random times. The solos are always awesome which makes Trivium have a better grade in my book.

My favorite songs on this cd are Sworn and Demon. Sworn is fast and smooth, while Demon is a fist raising piece.

I guess Trivium has something that grasps me tightly. I cannot stop listening to them no matter how many times I have in the past. So unless your a true fan of these guys and need to have all of their work this cd is pointless at the time. I've had it for a couple years now before their newer material was released. My review was just to point out that Trivium started out strong and supurb.

Inearthed - Ubiguitous Absence of Remission (Pre-Children of Bodom) (224)

Line-up:

Alexi Laiho - Vocals & Guitar
Samuli Miettinen - Bass
Jaska Raatikainen - Drums

Recorded at Astia-Studios from July 6th until July 9th in 1995 by Anssi Kippo.
Mixed at Astia-Studios by Anssi Kippo.

Music written by Alexi Laiho, lyrics by Samuli Miettinen.

The demo was played only by Alexi (guitars, bass, vocals and right hand of
keyboard) and Jaska (drums and left hand of keyboard). Kuoppala (who joined the
band just after the recordings) and Miettinen didn't play on this demo but they
were named as current members of the band in the booklet.

Female vocals on "Translucent Image" performed by Nina Keitel (not much known
about her; she lives in Lappeenranta and studies).

-The word "Ubiguitous" doesn't exist. Maybe it was a mistake on the cover and
it should mean "Ubiquitous".
-Some riffs and vocal melodies in "Translucent Image" were used in Sinergy's
"Beware The Heavens".
-The Intro of the "Ubiguitous Absence Of Remission" demo was made by Peter
Hajba a.k.a Skaven for a PC demo called "Second Reality".

Inearthed - Implosion of Heaven (Pre Children of Bodom) (224)

Line-up:

Alexi Laiho - Vocals & Guitar
Samuli Miettinen - Bass
Jaska Raatikainen - Drums

-Recorded at Munkkiniemen demostudio with a 24 track recorder, 20th & 21st of
August 1994
-Music written by Alexi Laiho, lyrics by Samuli Miettinen.
-The outro "Tss, Aah !!!" is more or less a joke. The guitar melody of it is
from an advertisement of some light beer which was shown in Finnish TV in 1994.
"Tss" describes the sound of opening the beer bottle and "Aah" stands for
pleasure of the drinker. On Children of Bodom's cover of 'Hellion' (W.A.S.P.) an
intro appears that sounds very similar to this outro.

Evile (UK) - All Hallows Eve (Ep) (320)

line-up :

Matt Drake - Vocals, Rhythm guitar
Ol Drake - Lead guitar (The Senseless)
Mike Alexander - Bass
Ben Carter - Drums

Review :

Ok just a foreword before I explain in detail a little more about this EP; Why are these guys not signed?! I think from that you can gather that perhaps, its more than slightly above average in quality.

Id better get to the songs in hand. The EP is just over half an hour long, pretty generous considering its only an EP, thats longer than quite a few albums, so in terms of listening time theyre hardly ripping us off. But is it all filler? Or is it immense? The latter. The album kicks off with killer from the deep, an epic track in itself, beginning with the razor-blade sharp guitar tones slamming you in the face like a sledgehammer, before cranking up a few gears into a riff, well and what a fucking riff. Get banging your head, but be ready to check in for whiplash by the end of the album!

Next track is another highlight, takes no prisoners, and theres a speedy little solo to introduce you to the song before the main riff kicks in. In this song Evile certainly show us how having 2 guitarists is a distinct advantage, using the second to add more depth and melody to the music. An interlude greets us about half way through, calming down a little before the gain comes back in slowly, topped with an ultra-melodic solo of the highest order. The song closes with a soft acoustic outro before the next thrash behemoth.

Third track, Prophecy, Id have to put down as the weakest track on the album. Not to say its crap, oh no, its still far better than the vast majority of crap labelled as music in the industry. Catchy chorus too, cant complain there, and the soloing is top-fucking-notch, hell this is the worst song on here and it still annihilates! Bang that fucking head!

Now here we have The Living Dead, the way this one begins, hinting at the riff to follow, is bloody ace. What thrash album is complete without a song about zombies?! Especially when its as good as this! A little pause, then the vocalist begins. Oh yeah thought I might add that the vocals are yet another highlight, his style fits the music perfectly, rough yet not quite shouting, and all are perfectly audible. A life of death broke and decayed, They walk again to bleed the day gotta love it. Song speeds up, and there is some beeeyuuuuwtiful soloing that really shows off Ol Drakes guitar talents. The staple riff comes back, and the eerie haunting moans of the living dead can be heard, this is how samples should be used. Followed by some more melodic leads, over Matt Drakes screams of the living dead!.

Final full song on here, the title track, begins with a decent riff and a little solo. Hell these riffs are infectious as hell, if youre not banging your head I ask why?! Also, amazing gang-vocals are used in this song, besides from the crystal clear production, theres nothing to separate this from the thrash greats of the 80s. After the second verse, up goes the tempo, and its really time to make the neck ache. In comes an epic solo that is carried effortlessly by the sublime riffing. You would have thought by 2003 that this stuff wasnt original any more? But somehow these guys prove us very wrong.

Finally, to finish off the album, torment, an acoustic instrumental that fades in, the calm after the storm so to speak, a nice way to finish off the album. Not one flaw with this, expertly done. Im giving this EP such a high score because it really does deserve it, considering it was self-produced it manages to shine so well and all of the members abilities are on show. Well done to the guys in Evile, and theyre even better live. The energy! One of the best thrash albums (Ok so its an EP, but Im going to class it as an album since its long enough) to come out in a good few years, oh, and their Hell demo is even better!

Line-up:

Andreas "Gerre" Geremia - vocals
Frank Thorwarth - bass
Axel Katzmann - guitars
Andy Bulgaropulos - guitars
Oliver "O.W." Werner - drums

Review :

Its really awesome to hear the demo version of Rundown Quarter. You know the track that was re-recorded for the album B-Day? I really like the feel of the song, and the chorus followed along by the riffing and guitar solo shows what Tankard are really all about (speed, diversity, and fun).

Guerres vocals are done in a different manner than the Tankard of today. They are definitely spunkier and at the same time harsher, making it sound very much like punk instead of heavy metal. Not to worry though, this is still heavy metal, but very much more like under-produced heavy metal. Don't forget the fact that this is a demo, and the audio quality is what kills most of its value.

I got this demo thanks to the special limited edition of B-Day which included this demo and their other demo titled Alcoholic Metal. This is one hell of a deal, especially if youre a fan of Tankard. Two good demos and one hell of a full-length for the price of one definitely something you should look into.

Review :

The legendary technical death metal group Cynic as we know recently got back together for a reunion tour. I thought it was only going to be just that but now it seems that Cynic is wanting to actually make a new album. And it also seems that they have made a promo for two of their newly written songs. I was able to catch a listen to these new tracks and damn I am stunned.

Cynic is back, and better than ever. These new songs sound just like a natural progression from Focus. They sound like they might as well have never split up in the first place. The technicality, the seamless fusion of jazz, the vocoder, the harsh vocals, the clean vocals, the melody, its all their and they have stepped it up in quality.

Review :

this is about as perfect as death metal can get. It's smart without sounding too smart for it's own good, it's exciting, fresh, inspired and the production/mix allows every instrument to be heard easily. There's really not much to compare this to. If I had to I would describe it as a mixture of Atheist's "Unquestionable Presence" and Death's "Human," not because that's where these guys played elsewhere, but because to me that's what it really sounds like. If you love death metal and feel like you've heard it all, track down mp3's of this one. You're not going to find it anywhere else and it's definately worth hearing because it is simply amazing...

Review :

It's really a shame Cynic didn't get signed early on their carreer, remaining an underground favorite releasing only demos for most part of their time together.

This demo shows a great improvement over the previous one. The three songs here are really amazing and show a band fully developed, a tech-thrash monster.

First of all, the musicianship is amazing. All players on the band are highly skilled. Sean Reinert already started to incorporate jazz influences here, and his drum lines are very intricate, aggressive and precise, althought not nearly as much as on his later work. Jason Gobel and Paul Masvidal deliver sharp aggressive riffs and very complex solos. The addition of Tony Choy on bass gave another dimension to Cynic, since he is a very skilled and creative bass player. Paul Masvidal vocals here are quite fun and far away from the "Focus" vocals. They're a raspy scream with a lot of work on diction. You can hear the words very clearly. His vocals remind me a bit of Sabbat's Martin Walkyer, but with not as much range.

Cynic (US) - Reflections of a Dying World (Demo) (160)

Line-up :

Paul Masvidal - Guitar, Vocals

Mark Van Erp - Bass
Sean Reinert - Drums

Review :

This demo is released basically to show the band's evolution, and what the thrash roots that Cynic had, really were.

Paul has probably transfered his skilled back and forth from Master, as you can tell by the intro track to this demo, Denaturalizing Leaders. Sean continues to hammer away at his kit, in odd time fashions (Though not as much deviation as Focus). The vocals are quite impressive, considering Paul almost lost his voice over it. I assume he can only go on for so long with the harsh vocals, judging by the shorter length of songs. Most demo songs-- even by starting bands, are short in time. For a band at the beginning, they are quite good for starting out. Almost 4 minutes on the first song. That is impressive. What I also enjoyed is how the tracks flow together so easily, but not so much you cannot tell the difference between the songs (Aka: DragonForce).
The bass on this album is heavy as hell if you can make it out. Mark Van Erp isn't Tony Choy or Sean Malone, but he sure holds his part well.

Do not get me wrong, these songs are technical, and there are certain time signature changes, just not as much as Focus has. Though we have the technical parts, there is definitely ear-candy solo's throughout this album. On top of the epic solos, we also have the aggressiveness that everyone enjoys in the tremolo picking or ultra heavy power chords. There is no lack of that, making this a possible headbanging experience. You can just feel the heavy riffs off of Agitating Affliction.
Sadly, I wish I could write a longer review like always, but this is only a four song demo. I will leave with you with one important line: Only get this if you cannot get enough Cynic, or enjoy classic death metal with some very heavy riffs. Other then that and I believe you will not really enjoy this.

Cynic (US) - '88 Demo (Demo) (192)

Line-up :

Jack Kelly - Vocals
Paul Masvidal - Guitar
Mark Van Erp - Bass
Sean Reinert - Drums

Review :

Prior to evolving into the genre-defying, massively influential, almost legendary "jazz-metal" pioneers the world came to know on 1993's Focus, Cynic were much like any other metal band from Florida's blosomming scene, searching for a musical identity and delivering a raw thrash metal assult. While this first demo obviously bares little resemblance to what the band would eventually become, this is still some crushing and surprisingly intelligent early material from a group of musicians who clearly had the poetential to make their mark on the metal scene, overcoming some predictably muddy sound quality to shine through as an undeniably impressive effort in its own capacity.

Paul Masvidal was handling all the guitars at this point, and while his later jazz-tinged experimentalism is nowhere to be found he still creates some great riffage and swift soloing which combines with a speedy and precise performance from the already impressive Sean Reinert behind the kit to create the basis of these three songs. Early bassist Mark Van Erp is no Tony Choy or Sean Malone, nor does he need to be, providing a steady (if at times slightly inaudible) backbone to the ripping guitars. This demo is also the only recorded appearance of original vocalist Jack Kelly, who has little going for him in the way of originality (his gravelly shouting is a little reminiscent of Tom Angelripper to these ears) but provides a sufficiently agressive and energetic performance to give the songs some extra punch and certainly pull his own weight.

Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II (Full Length) (320)

Line Up :

Michael Kiske: Vocals
Kai Hansen: Lead & Rhythm Guitars
Michael Weikath: Lead & Rhythm Guitars
Markus Grosskopf: Bass Guitar
Ingo Schwichtenberg: Drums

Review :

Best power metal album ever part 2

Some albums change everything. Thats exactly what Keepers 2 did. Depending on how you look at it, this nine song offering clocks in at either just under 50 minutes, or just over twenty years. Were talking changing the face of metal. And its even possible to put a name to that face: Michael Weikath. Let me explain.

The name that actually comes to mind when most people say Keepers 2 is Michael Kiske. Kiske himself has passed into metal mythology alongside a whole host of legendary vocalists that can do no wrong (Midnight, Halford, Dio etc.). But we can talk about him another time. The moment actually belongs to Helloween guitarist Michael Weikath. He contributed four songs. Collectively they laid the foundations for nothing less than an entire generation of speed, power, and symphonic metal. The scary part is that every one of those four songs is yet to be matched.

This is a classic and groundbreaking record in the history shelves of metal, together with part I. A source of inspiration and influence to countless bands to follow.
This is also the last chapter in the Hansen - Helloween (80's) glorious era, from where onwards the band went downhill (in my opinion).

A MUST HAVE for any power/speed,heavy metal and open-minded hard rock fan.
